WARNING: The following article will obliterate any and all excuses you have created for why you can not be successful. If you wish to continue to effectively believe these excuses, please skip today’s post.

When I was a kid, I used to be sure that I was going to be rich. When I was in film school, I was sure I was going to be the next big movie director. And today, for the first time in a long time, I am sure of those things again. It’s just a matter of time.

I realized this the other day, before Jiu Jitsu class, while reading the back of a t-shirt. As stupid as that sounds, it is actually true. I’m sitting there stretching between classes and I see this printed on the back of my boy’s t-shirt

“What would you do if I told you, you could not fail”

I started thinking about YinvsYang immediately, and figured I’d write a post about the concept. However, I thought the quote could go even further. I started thinking about it, and suddenly, I realized something I could not believe. How did I not think of this before? My eyes popped open with excitement, like a kid who finally figures out the way to beat a tough video game. What I realized was…

Failure does not exist.

Take a minute to let this settle in for a second.

Failure does not really exist.

Think about it. What exactly is failure?

In the literal sense, ‘failure’ is a word. In the Oxford American dictionary, a ‘word’ is a single distinct conceptual unit of language, compromising inflected and various forms. Words are created by humans to have a meaning. Oxford American dictionary defines ‘failure’ in 2 ways.

1. A lack of success.

An unsuccessful person, enterprise, or thing

lack of success in passing a test

A grade that is not high enough to pass a test.

2. The action or state of not functioning.

A sudden cessation of power

The collapse of a business

Upon closer study, you see that ‘failure’ is only specific to a moment in time.

Being unsuccessful means you have not reached success yet. That is time specific. It only takes having success once to realize your time ‘being unsuccessful’ was actually just the bumpy ‘road to success’.

Failing a man made test happens at a specific time. Many students have failed a test, and then passed the class.

A sudden cessation of power has different details behind it every time.

Businesses only collapse once, unless they are rebuilt and collapse again. Either way, it’s unique to a moment in time.

The point is you can fail in the short term hundreds of times, but that does not make you a failure in the long run. Failure is a word that is based on other’s perception. An unsuccessful person, and a grade that is not passing, are both defined by man. Man creates the test, and Man creates a definition of failing that test.

Unless you let a time that you fail be your last moment chasing that goal, how can you possibly be a failure? The answer is, you can’t. If you continue chasing your dreams, it is impossible to be considered a failure. You are just going down your path to success, and these are the bumps in the road you are facing. Each one you navigate over builds character, confidence, and wisdom. Just look at some these ‘failures’ we know about in life….

Was Michael Jordan a failure when he got cut from his high school basketball team?

Was Donald Trump a failure when his business went bankrupt?

Was Abraham Lincoln a failure when the country broke out into Civil War?

The answer to all of these is both ‘yes’ and ‘no’. If they would have gave up at those moments, then yes, they would have cemented failure for them self. However, they did not give up, and history shows that these men have been anything but failures.

‘Failure’ is not a term to define our life as a whole. It is used to define the sum of events up until right now. For example, if I fail my driving test, then right now, I am a failure. However, once I pass it, that is no longer the case. It just took me two times to succeed.

‘Failure’ is also a manmade term. Animals don’t understand failure. They are simply survivors. Whatever they fail at, they try again and again till they figure it out, or they move on and forget about it.

Failure does not exist, except in our own minds.

The mind is powerful, and can show you all sorts of potential devastating outcomes. However, the mind is a muscle. It needs to be developed and taught the right answers. The mind’s best teacher is experience. To get experience, you must fail over and over. These ‘failures’ are all just moments in time. Once you reach your goal, the ‘failures’ wind up becoming the obstacles you overcame. The bigger the failure, the bigger the obstacle, and subsequently, the better the story.

The fear of failure, is the fear of your own mind.

Anything we want to accomplish can be done, if we just realize the road to success is going to be bumpy on the way there. Many people try to travel the road to success, but as soon as the terrain gets rough, they turn and run back. Successful people keep going. They know the road to success is never easy, therefore they never expect it to be. In fact, they know the more difficult the terrain, the greater the success will be. It’s all relative.

Once you realize this, than the truth becomes obvious. We really can do anything we want to as long as we put our mind to it. Putting our mind to it means we are willing to deal with the terrain of the road we choose to travel.

Becoming successful is really all about answering the following questions, which you can do in the comments below.

What do you dream of doing?

Are you truly willing to deal with ALL the bumps in the road it takes to get there, even if you don’t know what those bumps are?

——————————————————————————————–

Every Wednesday is Personal Development in Business…

Unless you are living under a rock, I’m sure you are aware of the historic day that took place yesterday. Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th president of the U.S.A. Stepping aside from our own political views, you can not help but like this man. It is undeniable that he is a natural born leader, regardless of what you think he will do as our President.

This country has been desperate for a leader to guide it into the information age, and to connect with the exploding youth of today. It appears for now that we have found what we have been looking for.

As a business owner, there are many things to learn from Barack Obama. Being a business owner is like leading a very small country in your own right. You do not have all the answers. You are not always going to be right. There are many different opinions on what is right and wrong, and there is also a balance of keeping everyone involved relatively happy.

However, watching President Obama make it look easy yesterday, I thought long and hard about his approach. I believe that is why he is such a magnetic individual. His personality resonates with everyone because he speaks from the heart. We believe, whether wrong or right, he has our best interest in mind.

Inspired by watching this natural born leader during the inauguration, here are…

7 tips to make you a better business owner.

1) Being right is less important than doing what’s right.

Work with your team. Sure, you can have an opinion or a firm belief, but being a leader is about listening to those around you, not just pretending to.

2) Know your limits

President Obama made it clear that he can only do so much. It is up to each one of us to help guide this country to a better place. He put the challenge on us to be accountable for our actions.

3) Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow.

Being a great leader means knowing when it’s your turn to follow. Sometimes, a person beneath you may have a better plan. A good leader recognizes this, and understands that sometimes you lead by following others.

4) You catch more bees with honey.

As a business owner, just like a President, you can have many enemies. Some are even in your own camp. However, it is how you handle these disputes that conveys your leadership ability to others. Do not overreact and try to make each issue a case of right and wrong. Listen to your enemies, and challenge them not with words or power, but with your example. You may find an enemy becomes a great ally.

5) Take it one challenge at a time

Imagine being President Obama right now. He faces some of the toughest challenges any president has ever had to. The same can be true for a new business owner. Try not to get caught up in the pressure. Simply handle each challenge one at a time, and take it from there. You can not fix everything in one day, so no need to try.

6) It is okay to be Human.

President Obama did not come out and claim to know everything, have all the answers, or prove he is smarter than everyone else. Instead, he let his humanity show and that is what drew us all to him. We are all human, no matter how hard we try to be perfect robots. It’s okay to show our humanity. We all make mistakes, and a business owner, or the President of the U.S.A. is no exception. Admit it when you make a mistake, and take the pressure off of everyone else afraid to do so.

7) Don’t worry about the haters.

Haters to me are people who have not been able to get things in their own life to go right. Therefore, they hate on everyone else trying to accomplish the things they could not. It is most important to believe in yourself, no matter what those around you say. If you believe you can change the world, than you sure as hell have a chance of doing so. Look no further than a man named Barack Hussein Obama for your inspiration.

Now it’s your turn. In the comments section, add some other ways President Obama may have inspired you….

——————————————————————————————–

EEEEH! EEEEH! EEEEH!….

I was awoken this Friday morning by the 5 am alarm clock on my iphone. As I wiped the crust from my eyes and stumbled into the bathroom, I realized that today was really the 1st day in 2009. I turned on the shower, debating whether to really count the 1st, which is more of a holiday than a typical day. Now that that was over, I had to once again teach a Muay Thai class at 6 am, just like the Fridays of last year.

As the water warmed, I stepped in the shower and thought about why this is considered a new year. I mean, yes the calendar has changed, and the dates on my checks will have 2009 on them, but other than that, what exactly is new? My routine is still the same. Nothing significant has changed in my life, and yet I am supposed to be excited for 2009?

That’s when it hit me (not the water, of course). If you plan to reach all of your resolutions in 2009, then TODAY is your opportunity to get started on the right foot. TODAY is the one day you must have the courage to change. TODAY is the first in a line of 363 other dominoes waiting to fall. The choice is yours whether they fall the same way as last year.

Make a Change

It is time to replace the words ‘New Year’ with the phrase ‘New Opportunity’. If you are expecting to make this year better than the last, then you have to make a commitment to change by taking your first big action TODAY. That is your opportunity.

Do something different. Take that initiative, and let the rest of the year follow suit. Many of us spend our Holiday recapping the prior year, and thinking about all the wonderful things 2009 can possibly bring for us. Well, the only way any of those things will come true is if we start to make a change right now.

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

Not on Monday.

Today!

If you plan to lose weight, then start that diet today. If you plan to get in shape, make today your 1st workout. If you drink coffee every morning, maybe for some motivation today, you should try tea. The point is you must make an effort to change.

If you just go about the same routine as last year, how can you expect anything to change? Think of the movie Groundhog Day. Until Bill Murray actually made a change, he kept waking up to the same pattern over and over again..

That is why it is imperative to start on your resolutions NOW. To help get you motivated to do so, Yin vs Yang has come up with some resolutions of our own.

A NEW Year at Yin Vs Yang

This being our 2nd year, we have decided to take a more routine approach with our writing. We are going follow our own advice on change and set a new weekly routine.

Mondays - Personal Development through Jiu Jitsu

Wednesdays – Personal Development through Business

Fridays – Video post or Video review.

In between, we will have random topics, jokes, stories, and quotes. However, this routine will give everyone a chance to know what’s coming, and when. So if you are a fan of the Mixed Martial Arts world, then you know every Monday I will have a story for you. If you read Yin vs Yang to improve your networking, business approach, or financial situation, then Wednesdays will be for you.

If you are a fan of the increasing popularity of videos on the world wide web, then Fridays will be a fun day for you.

If you enjoy them all, then sign up for our RSS Feed or subscribe by email below. This way you won’t ever miss an article.

Take some inspiration from Yin vs Yang and make a change today in your own life. Our goal this year is to help make 2009 the best year for all of us. However, it all starts with today. Are you up for it? Inspire us all by leaving the change you are going to make in the comments section below.

——————————————————————————————–

Personal Development is something we take very serious at Yin vs Yang. We have found the best way to approach something serious day after day is to make it as enjoyable as possible.

About 8 months ago, Yin vs Yang was born. My partner and I, along with another person we were working with at the time, had decided to start a blog. I came up with the concept, and we all agreed it was a good idea. We were passionate to start blogging, especially me, cause I love to write.

New ideas are always a lot of fun.

We immediately began writing and trying to figure out this idea of blogging. It was not easy, and the spark from the original night only lasts so long. When you write something and no one on earth responds, that original idea can seem like hogwash. So, after a short while, it was just my partner and I left with Yin vs Yang.

The other issue too was, learning how to write for a blog.

Just cause you know how to write, does not mean it comes to you naturally. When we first started this blog, I had no idea what I was trying to write. I had ideas for themes, but I wasn’t even really sure what Yin vs Yang was going to be. I wrote stories on personal development, my past, and included things like ‘quote of the day’ and ‘Friday video day’ for awhile. I tried to post everyday, worried when I missed a day as if anyone was actually reading back then.

I also was trying to write to please at first. Instead of just writing what I thought I should, I was too concerned with what others might think. I was too concerned with getting comments, or trying to. I was too concerned about a lot of distractions that really did not matter.

I was also concerned with trying to make money. Just like you, I had read about all of these bloggers making a fortune from affiliate marketing and advertising. I had read that ‘content is king’ and that gave me hope. I had read that with enough traffic there were a 1,000 ways to make some profit. That gave me motivation.

As time progressed, I slowly found my voice and my style of writing. However, even that is still developing, and probably always will be. The point is that this blog you are reading all started simply with a passionate idea. Just one idea, where everyone in the room agreed ‘that’s cool’. That was the birth of this blog. Not some big plan or strategy, not some researching for the perfect opportunity. Just a passionate idea.

Today, we have developed a nice fan base that continues to grow. I have met and networked with a large amount of intelligent people who have expanded my knowledge base like never before. I have learned, grown as a person, and become a better overall individual because of this blog.

But is it because of this blog, or because we actually followed through on a single passionate idea?

Following through with a passionate idea always takes work.

You have to keep pushing even when others think you should stop.

You have to be able to adapt your original idea over time.

You have to find motivation even when you don’t feel like it.

You have to believe in yourself.

You have to be patient.

Only then will you feel like I do about Yin vs Yang. I do not feel this way because this blog has been such a financial success either. I believe we have made $8 overall since we started. That’s almost a $1/month, split two ways. I don’t think anyone would put all the time we have into something for that little of a return.

So why do I feel so proud of Yin vs Yang?

It is just the mere fact that it represents following through persistently with a passionate idea. I never intended to be in the position I am in now with the blog. I never intended to reach so many people across the globe either. What I learned is, it’s not a matter of your intentions sometimes. It’s not a matter of planning.

It’s a matter of doing.

If you have a passionate idea, one that seems great for you, it is your duty to follow up on it. I have had many, many passionate ideas. Very few have I actually followed up on persistently. However, the ones I have turned out to be the most influential, self developing experiences I have ever had.

I think following through on your passion is the path to becoming a better individual. It introduces you to other people passionate about their ideas. It opens doors to network with people offering opportunities you never imagined. It makes your life feel fulfilled.

Working each day at something is very tough. The only way I have found to combat that is by doing things I am passionate about. Passion seems to be an endless fuel that keeps on burning. The things I am passionate about I put in the extra work needed because it does not feel like work. It feels like fulfillment.

If you have enjoyed this blog, then you have enjoyed reading something we are passionate about writing. You have enjoyed the fact that someone else is persistently pursuing a single passionate idea. The only thing more enjoyable than experiencing someone else living out their passion is living out your own passion.

What are you waiting for?

Check back this month for my first ever video blog post. I will also be guest posting a few times this month. If you are interested, you can check the ever growing ‘links‘ page to see all the links to my guest posts.

A little while back, my aunt mentioned to me that she had a Yin vs Yang moment one day. My aunt is an avid reader of the blog, but I was not sure what she meant by this. She explained that she was running on a treadmill, about to give up at the same time she always does, when she thought of what I wrote in a post. She sincerely said it gave her the strength to run longer than she ever had before. I smiled, as the compliment immediately inflated my head.

Then again, the other day, a friend of mine mentioned to me….

‘Dude, I had a Yin Yang kinda moment the other day.’

He explained he had to do a big project for a new class at school that required he give a speech. He is not the public speaker type and he was literally sweating bullets just thinking about it (Actually it is quite amazing the amount of perspiration the fear of pulic speaking can cause!). Then he thought of a post I recently wrote about changing your perception. He said it calmed him caused he realized, in the scheme of things, this was all part of the process. It was a one time class, and really, what did he have to lose. He gave the speech and just got an A on it. I would say it worked out perfect, but he said he still sweat a lot in the process. Oh well, almost

This is not to toot our own horn at Yin vs Yang. Of course it feels great to hear things like this. The goal of this site is to help people enhance their wisdom by revealing how their body, mind, and soul work together, as well for us to help expand our own wisdom by writing about it.

I wanted to thank all of the readers who have either emailed us or commented, because it is you who have helped steer us in the right direction.

It is a wonderful feeling when you hear that something you created actually helps other people. As we have continuously grown in the past 7 months, it seems that YinVsYang has started to take on a life of its own. I definitely had an idea of what this site was about when we started, but as time has progressed it is clear what Yin vs Yang has become.

A Yin vs Yang moment is anytime you use your mind to overcome any fears, limitations, nervousness, or emotions to reach your goal.

It is anytime you are able to step back from a personally difficult moment, as if you were someone else, and capitalize on what you see from the outside looking in. It is about leaving behind all judgments, expectations, and preconceptions in order to see only what actually is.

The common thread between these two stories, and the numerous emails we have received, is that a Yin vs Yang moment is when you realize it is only you who is setting the limitations.

That is a Yin vs Yang moment, and I wanted to thank my readers, friends, and family for identifying it for me. As a writer about self development and improvement, it can be tough to cling to a single message about how you can improve. There are so many schools of thought on improving yourself, and no clear way to prove which is best. Plus, as a person constantly trying to improve myself, I understand it is a journey that never ends. Therefore, different concepts work for different people at different times. In fact, what is most clear is that there is not one single way that works for everyone.

However, everyone has experienced the kind of moments where it is solely up to you and you alone. You either give it your best, or let the fear of failure defeat you before you even try.

For example, my aunt on the treadmill was approaching the limits that she had naturally set for herself. No one had tested her to see exactly how much she could go before she had to stop. Without knowing it, she had set that limit herself. When she had that Yin vs Yang moment, she naturally destroyed that personal limitation. Plus, like anything else, it is contagious. Think of the confidence boost you get whenever you have exceeded your own expectations. It is amazing how good it feels and it makes you want to destroy even more limitations.

Opening up your mind to the limitations it can set on itself is the most important concept to get out of this site.

The first step to destroying these limitations is to become aware of them. The next time you face a personally challenging moment, think of Yin vs Yang. Take a deep breath and think of the many examples our readers have given us about how they started to overcome their own personal limitations simply by recognizing them. Hopefully this will help give you the motivation to understand that you can do just the same. Anyone can achieve anything if they just put their mind to it. Even you or me

Have you ever had a Yin vs Yang moment before?

YinvsYang is just now entering its 7th month. I thought that is a good reason to celebrate. Maybe I am in the celebratory mood as my wife’s birthday is today (happy birthday babe!). Either way, it’s a great time to look back on the incredible journey that started with a simple idea.

The first 6 months of writing for this blog have taught me an awful lot about myself and the world around me. Anytime you have consistent communication with people from various places & backgrounds it seems you can’t help but grow as a person.

Growing as a person means learning plenty of lessons.

When I first started this blog, I now realize I had a certain way of talking ‘AT’ people. As I read some of the old posts, it is obvious that my personal writing style has evolved. I’m not saying it has gotten better or worse. It has just grown into it’s own approach. Consequently, this way of speaking has seeped into my everyday life because I now have a better understanding of how I may sound to others at times. It has also taught me the benefit of trying different ‘approaches’ with different people in order to better communicate.

In my opinion, communicating with others is what a blog is all about. When YinvsYang began, I really did not know where it would go. I know a lot of bloggers plan & track their growth, and are dedicated to the stats as they should be. I definitely find joy when I reach a new level of subscribers, or have a particularly strong day of traffic, but for some reason, it is not what drives me with this site. What drives me is the communication. When this blog first came to be, I barely knew what a blog was.

In fact, the greatest attraction to writing was just to share my thoughts. I have always found that sharing my thoughts, however embarrassing they may be, benefits me tremendously. It helps me come to terms with some of my past that I wish I could change. It also helps me write all of the things down that I want to be. I can not say I follow everything I write to a tee. In fact, the reason I can write about self improvement is because I have a lot to improve on myself. Sometimes writing about a certain subject gives me the strength to improve in that area of my life.

Teaching others is sometimes the best way to reinforce those teachings in yourself.

I also have benefited from getting others to share their thoughts. For instance, sometimes I write a post, and believe in it whole-heartily as I publish it. Sounds good to me, I think. Then one comment from one reader can make me re-evaluate my whole logic. It is amazing how it opens my eyes to other view points. It reveals how other people may have a totally different interpretation then I intended. It expands my perception, and enhances my communication the next time around.

I thought on our 6 month anniversary we would be a bit different at YinvsYang.

This post is not to celebrate a certain number of subscribers we have reached, or any other statistical success of the site. This post is to celebrate any way our thoughts may have helped you in your life, and all the ways expressing ourselves, and reading your reactions, has benefited us in our lives. When it is all said and done, that is what I will remember most about this experience anyway.

In light of this celebration, I’d like to share some of the small success that YinvsYang has had recently. One of the people I have ‘met’ through blogging recently bestowed YinvsYang with the honor of putting us in the Top Personal Development Blogs. There are links to some wonderful, wonderful blogs to peruse in your spare time if you get a chance.

We’ve also recently added a new category here called ‘The Spirit World‘. This will focus more on the spirit. It was inspired by the success of this post. Also, here are some other popular posts we have had at the site for any new readers.

Also, just a reminder, check back for part 3 of ‘The Eternal, Internal Battle of Mind vs. Body’. For those that missed it, here are the links for the 1st two parts…

Now, that we have taken time to walk down memory lane & celebrate our achievements, I’d like to turn the eye toward the future. We have a brand new design coming soon that I am very excited about. We also are looking to improve the site for our readers. Please leave any and all suggestions in the comment box. Here are some questions we are hoping to get answers too…

The reason yin vs yang was developed was to give us an outlet to discuss the secret battle going on inside the human mind on a daily basis. Our mind is our most powerful asset. But with every gift comes a curse, and the mind can be a powerful enemy as well. Yin vs yang was developed to balance people’s lives by shedding light on how to deal with this eternal battle within us.

Each day we face a myriad of choices. And each day those choices we make effect our future. Every single one of them. Sometimes, including me, we make the easy choice. Sometimes we push ourself and make the tough choice. Yet, we always debate internally about which choice would have been better. That is the battle within, the Yin vs Yang. It’s the struggle for the mind to get the body to do what it needs to do. Sometimes, our body does not want to listen. Only our mind can make it listen.

A friend told me he recently read that ‘the things in life that you don’t want to do are what define who you are‘. Basically, my friend explained, it means that how you deal with all of the stuff you are afraid to do is what will define your life. Going with this philosophy, what defines your life? What is your mind telling you to do that your body never seems to listen?

Ever wonder where you would be right now if you always did what you thought you should? What if laziness, or emotions, never played a part in your life? What if you simply did all the little things that your mind always whispered, but your body ignored?

Just a few questions from Yin vs Yang to ponder over the day. I hope the answers give you the motivation to start listening more to your mind, and turn that enemy into your greatest asset.

This is a place where there is no right and wrong. There is only what is. We do not judge. We do not hate. We simply understand. Welcome to our site.

The basis of this site is based on an ancient philosophy that simplifies the complexities of life: The Yin & the Yang. In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang are generalized descriptions of the antitheses or mutual correlations in human perceptions of phenomena in the natural world, combining to create a unity of opposites in the theory of the Taiji. The term liang yi, “two mutually correlated opposites”, also known as Yin and Yang or heaven and earth, has a similar meaning:

….The dual concepts of yin and yang (or heaven and earth) describe two primal opposing but complementary principles or cosmic forces said to be found in all non-static objects and processes in the universe. This seemingly paradoxical concept is the cornerstone of most branches of Chinese philosophy, as well as traditional Chinese medicine.

A simple way to put it: In good there is always a little bit of evil, in evil there is always a little bit of good – everything has two aspects.

Read this excerpt from http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/CHPHIL/YINYANG.HTM:“The yin and yang represent all the opposite principles one finds in the universe. Under yang are the principles of maleness, the sun, creation, heat, light, Heaven, dominance, and so on, and under yin are the principles of femaleness, the moon, completion, cold, darkness, material forms, submission, and so on. Each of these opposites produce the other: Heaven creates the ideas of things under yang, the earth produces their material forms under yin, and vice versa; creation occurs under the principle of yang, the completion of the created thing occurs under yin, and vice versa, and so on.This production of yin from yang and yang from yin occurs cyclically and constantly, so that no one principle continually dominates the other or determines the other.

All opposites that one experiences—health and sickness, wealth and poverty, power and submission—can be explained in reference to the temporary dominance of one principle over the other. Since no one principle dominates eternally, that means that all conditions are subject to change into their opposites.”

Everything has its opposite. Everything is related. In order to achieve success, you must taste failure. In order to win, you must know what it means to lose. And all of that is okay. It is okay to lose. It is okay to fail. Once you accept this simple thought process, it will have an enormous effect on your daily life. Let that new positive energy infiltrate your spirit.

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day.
